A 1996 recording of a musical piece penned by a Central Michigan University faculty member will soon be heard by audiences worldwide when it appears on a new compilation.
"Interplay for Piano Four Hands and Orchestra" by David Gillingham, a professor in CMU's School of Music, will be featured on "Perspectives," a two-disc recording to be released by Master Musicians Collective in late June.
The 10-minute piece was recorded in Prague by the Prague Radio Orchestra and "duo runedako," the husband-and-wife piano duo of Daniel Koppelman and Ruth Neville, both of whom teach at Furman University in South Carolina. Koppelman is a former CMU music faculty member.
"This CD will give closure to a recording project I began in the Czech Republic in the summer of 1996, and it will be a wonderful opportunity for my work to be included among other noted contemporary American composers," said Gillingham.
Additional composers to be featured on the compilation include Carter Pann, Meira Warshauer and Roger Davidson.
According to his biography, "Gillingham's works have been recorded by Klavier, Sony, Summit and Centaur. His works are regularly performed by nationally recognized ensembles including the Prague Radio Orchestra, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music Wind Ensemble, The University of Georgia Bands, North Texas University Wind Ensemble, Michigan State University Wind Ensemble, Oklahoma State Wind Ensemble, University of Oklahoma Wind Ensemble, Florida State Wind Ensemble, University of Florida (Miami) Wind Ensemble, University of Illinois Symphonic Band, Illinois State Wind Symphony, University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble, Indiana University Wind Ensemble and the University of Wisconsin Wind Ensemble."
Gillingham, who took a semester-long sabbatical leave in spring 2007 to compose his second symphony, recently released Vol. 1 of "The Music of David R. Gillingham" (Mark Custom Recordings). Two additional volumes will be released at a later date. In fall 2007, Gillingham will travel to Osaka, Japan, where he will guest conduct the Osakan Philharmonic Winds in a concert consisting entirely of his work. The Oct. 12 concert will be recorded for release as a compact disc.
