Through March 15/"Before the Bridge: Linking Michigan's Peninsulas Before the Mackinac Bridge" is on display through March 15 in the Clarke Historical Library. The exhibit, created in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Mackinac Bridge, examines the controversy behind the decision to build it. Special focus is on the book "Bridging the Straits: The Story of the Mighty Mac" by Larry Rubin, former executive director of the Mackinac Bridge Authority. Admission is free and open to the public. Through March 29/The annual All-CMU Student Juried Art Show will be on display March 8 through 29 in the Main Gallery of Central Michigan University's University Art Gallery. The show will feature a variety of artwork in all forms of media created by CMU students. An opening reception and awards ceremony will take place from noon to 3 p.m. March 15 in the gallery. Admission is free and open to the public. Regular hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Through April 1/The exhibit "From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of Charting America's Coasts" is on display through April 1 in the third-floor exhibition area of Central Michigan University's Charles V. Park Library. The exhibit, which is jointly curated by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, explores the history of America's Coastal Survey, a program dedicated to ensuring that mariners safely reach their ports of call along America's shoreline. Admission is free and open to the public. Hours are 7:50 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Thursdays, 7:50 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to midnight Sundays. Through April 2/"Studies and Collage from Italy," an exhibition of works by Central Michigan University senior Lindsay Mathews, will be on display Feb. 29 through April 2 in the Extended Hours Study of the Charles V. Park Library. The exhibit will feature drawings and watercolor paintings created during Mathews' study abroad experience in Florence, Italy. March 10, 11 and 13/Central Michigan University's recreation, parks and leisure services administration department offers open climbing on the A-Wall, its indoor climbing wall, from 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays and 8 to 11 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays during the spring semester. The wall is located in Room 112 of Finch Fieldhouse. Participants must sign an informed consent release waiver and pay a $7 fee to climb; participants under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver. There is an additional charge for equipment rental. Student staff members are on hand to assist climbers. March 10/Central Michigan University's history department will host "Getting to Know George Washington," a presentation by Edward Countryman, at 7 p.m. March 10 in the Charles V. Park Library Auditorium. Countryman, who has written multiple books about the American Revolution, is an Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer. Admission to the presentation, which will be the inaugural installment of the William T. Bulger History Endowment Lecture Series, is free and open to the public. March 11 through May 11/"THE SEEN AND THE UNSEEN An Imagined Reality," an exhibition of paintings by Shelley Newman Stevens, will be displayed March 11 through May 11 in the Baber Room of Central Michigan University's Charles V. The large-scale paintings feature lifelike figures set within dreamlike scenes and focus on the concept of how individuals resolve the conflict between who they are and how they wish to be perceived. March 29/"Terror at the Voting Booth: How Fear is Used in Politics," a conference examining how death anxiety is used to influence voter behavior, will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 29 in Plachta Auditorium in Central Michigan University's Warriner Hall.
