Through April 28/As part of Central Michigan University's recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month taking place throughout April, the exhibit "Spoken: Painted Photographs and Testimonies of Sexual Aggression Survivors" will be displayed April 14 through 28 in the third-floor exhibition area of the Charles V. Park Library. The exhibit features an interactive series of painted photographs and audio testimonies of survivors of sexual aggression created by artist Kyle Butler, a CMU senior from Shepherd. Hours are 7:50 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Thursdays, 7:50 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and noon to midnight Sundays. Admission is free and open to the public. Through April 28/"Perception in Contemporary Art Practices," an exhibition of works by Central Michigan University undergraduate students, is on display through April 28 in the Extended Hours Study of the Charles V. Park Library. The works featured in the exhibit are intended to explore how shifts in materials, content and context influence one's response to visual art. The exhibit will feature works by seniors Rachael Bradley and Trevor Grabill of Mount Pleasant, Diane Colombini of Harrison, Matthew Hebert of Commerce, Tabitha May of Lowell, and Evan Nowak of Petoskey. Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 7 a.m. to midnight Fridays, 9 a.m. to midnight Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free and open to the public. Through May 2/The eighth annual Central Michigan University Staff and Faculty Quilt Exhibit will take place April 14 through May 2 in the Multicultural Education Center on the lower level of CMU's Bovee University Center. Admission to the exhibit, which is co-sponsored by CMU's Network for Women, is free and open to the public. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Through May 3/A thesis exhibition of artwork by Central Michigan University May 2008 Bachelor of Fine Arts graduates will be displayed April 22 through May 3 in the Main and West Galleries of CMU's University Art Gallery. The exhibit will feature works by Danielle Bunn of Mount Pleasant, Kyle Butler of Shepherd, Daniel Janiten of Grosse Ile, Benjamin Kelley of Flushing and Cheryl Kelley of Big Rapids. An opening reception will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. April 26 in the gallery. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Through May 11/"THE SEEN AND THE UNSEEN An Imagined Reality," an exhibition of paintings by Shelley Newman Stevens, is on display through May 11 in the Baber Room of Central Michigan University's Charles V. Park Library. The large-scale paintings feature lifelike figures set within dreamlike scenes and focus on the concept of how individuals resolve the conflict between who they are and how they wish to be perceived. Hours are 7:50 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Thursdays, 7:50 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to midnight Sundays. Admission is free and open to the public. Through July 25/The exhibit "When France Claimed Michigan: 1608-1763" is on display through July 25 in Central Michigan University's Clarke Historical Library. The exhibit explores the period of time during which the French ruled Michigan, focusing on such subjects as Native American relations, European exploration of the Great Lakes, the fur trade, settlement patterns and the eventual end of French rule in North America. Through January 2009/"Beyond Barbie: Dolls, Dress and Culture in Global Perspective," an exhibit featuring more than 100 dolls dressed in traditional attire representing a variety of world cultures, is on display through January 2009 at Central Michigan University's Museum of Cultural and Natural History. In addition to the dolls, the exhibit also includes a children's educational activity room and special programs. The exhibition's elements are complemented by the museum's Web site, http://www.museum.cmich.edu, where visitors can view the dolls and learn about each one online. April 28, 29 and 31/Central Michigan University's recreation, parks and leisure services administration department offers open climbing on the A-Wall, its indoor climbing wall, from 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays and 8 to 11 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays during the spring semester. The wall is located in Room 112 of Finch Fieldhouse. Participants must sign an informed consent release waiver and pay a $7 fee to climb; participants under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver. There is an additional charge for equipment rental. Student staff members are on hand to assist climbers. April 28/Central Michigan University's Sexual Aggression Services will host a Candlelight Labyrinth Walk and Vigil at 7 p.m. April 28 in front of Finch Fieldhouse. The event, which is part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, is meant to raise awareness regarding sexual and domestic violence around the world and show support for survivors. Admission is free and open to the public; in case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to Finch Fieldhouse. April 30 through May 2/"The Big Move" will take place April 30 through May 2 in Central Michigan University's Finch Fieldhouse. During the third annual event, area residents may drop off furniture; cookware; and unopened, nonperishable food items, which will be donated to community members in need and to charities such as Women's Aid Service Inc., the Salvation Army, Goodwill, the American Red Cross and Eight Cap Head Start. May 1/Central Michigan University's College of Communication and Fine Arts will host the 2008 Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship and Media Leadership Speaker Series event at 6 p.m. May 1 at the Atheneum Hotel in Detroit. The event will include the presentation of the Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship, as well as a keynote speech by Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and Detroit native Ed Gordon. Gordon currently hosts the syndicated news program "Our World with Black Enterprise." In the past, he has served as a contributing correspondent to NBC's "Dateline" and "The Today Show," in addition to hosting "BET Tonight" and his own Black Entertainment Television network series, "Conversation with Ed Gordon." May 2/Central Michigan University's Multicultural Graduation Celebratory Committee and Minority Student Services will host a Multicultural Graduation Celebratory event at 7 p.m. May 2 in the Bovee University Center Auditorium. The ceremony will honor CMU's students of color who are graduating in May or August. Students interested in participating are asked to submit a registration form and $5 fee by 5 p.m. April 27. Forms can be obtained in and returned to Minority Student Services on the lower level of the Bovee University Center. May 4/The Newman School of Dance will present its 2008 spring recital at 1 and 5 p.m. May 4 in Plachta Auditorium of Central Michigan University's Warriner Hall. Performances will feature dancers ranging in age from 2 years to adult performing a variety of dance genres, including tap, ballet, ballroom, salsa, swing, hip hop and more; gymnastic and acrobatic elements also will be featured. Tickets cost $9 each and can be reserved by calling the Newman School of Dance at 989-386-9653. Tickets also will be available at the door if not sold out.

April 15/As part of Central Michigan University's celebration of Pride Week, a march will begin at 12:30 p.m. April 15 at the Wesley Foundation on the corner of Washington and Preston streets. The march will proceed through CMU's campus and conclude at the CMU seal on Warriner Mall with speaker presentations and a vigil honoring victims of hate crimes. April 17/As part of Central Michigan University's celebration of Pride Week, a presentation by Robyn Ochs, a longtime activist in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, will take place at noon April 17 in the Bovee University Center. Ochs, the editor of the "Bisexual Resource Guide" and the anthology "Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuals Around the World," also will deliver the week's keynote presentation at 7 p.m. April 17 in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium. Admission to the noon presentation, which is part of the Soup and Substance luncheon series, is free and open to the public; a soup-and-bread lunch will be provided. April 17/Central Michigan University's English department and the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences will host a reading by author Alex Shakar at 8 p.m. April 17 in the Charles V. Park Library Baber Room. The New York Times selected Shakar's novel "The Savage Girl" as a Notable Book, and his story collection "City in Love" was named an Independent Presses Editors Pick of the Year. April 26/A basketball game featuring mid-Michigan sports teams' mascots will take place at 1 p.m. April 26 in Central Michigan University's Rose Arena. Hosted by CMU basketball's mascot, "Rose Rowdie," the game also will include appearances by mascots from the Great Lakes Loons, Michigan State University, the Grand Rapids Griffins and more. Food, raffles and autographed sports memorabilia also will be featured. Admission is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted. Canceled Events

April 27/Central Michigan University's Swing Kids student organization will not host its weekly swing dance lessons at 7 p.m. April 27 as was previously announced. The final lessons of the semester will take place April 20. Lessons are expected to resume in the fall.
