Through July 2/"Ta mi l'ologo (Remind Me)," an exhibition of works by Central Michigan University graduate student Yetunde Oladunni, will be on display May 27 through July 2 in the Extended Hours Study of CMU's Charles V. Park Library. The textile designs featured in the exhibit are intended to provide a visual representation of the proverbs and oratory power of Nigeria's Yoruba tribe, from which Oladunni originates. Through July 25/The exhibit "When France Claimed Michigan: 1608-1763" is on display through July 25 in Central Michigan University's Clarke Historical Library. The exhibit explores the period of time during which the French ruled Michigan, focusing on such subjects as Native American relations, European exploration of the Great Lakes, the fur trade, settlement patterns and the eventual end of French rule in North America. Through August 20/The exhibit "The Art of the Clarke: Selections from the Francis and Mary Lois Molson Collection of Children's Book Illustrations" will be on display May 14 through Aug. 20 in the Baber Room of Central Michigan University's Charles V. Park Library. On loan from CMU's Clarke Historical Library, the exhibit features a variety of illustrations by such award-winning children's book illustrators as David Small, Michael Hague, Willy Pogany and Gennady Spirin. Through January 2009/"Beyond Barbie: Dolls, Dress and Culture in Global Perspective," an exhibit featuring more than 100 dolls dressed in traditional attire representing a variety of world cultures, is on display through January 2009 at Central Michigan University's Museum of Cultural and Natural History. In addition to the dolls, the exhibit also includes a children's educational activity room and special programs. The exhibition's elements are complemented by the museum's Web site, http://www.museum.cmich.edu, where visitors can view the dolls and learn about each one online. June 3/The American Red Cross will host a blood drive from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 3 in Central Michigan University's Finch Fieldhouse. During the drive, individuals can volunteer to donate blood that can be used for life-saving purposes throughout the country. Admission is free and open to the public. June 4 and 11/Central Michigan University's recreation, parks and leisure services administration department offers open climbing on the A-Wall, its indoor climbing wall, from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays during the summer months. The wall is located in Room 112 of Finch Fieldhouse. Participants must sign an informed consent release waiver and pay a $7 fee to climb; participants under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver. There is an additional charge for equipment rental. Student staff members are on hand to assist climbers. June 5/The sixth annual CMU Public Broadcasting Golf Outing will take place June 5 at Bucks Run Golf Club, 1559 S. Chippewa Road in Mount Pleasant. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The day will feature a four-person, 18-hole scramble; silent auction; prizes; and a hot lunch buffet. June 6/The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions at Central Michigan University will host its eighth annual golf outing June 6 at the Mount Pleasant Country Club, 3686 E. River Rd. in Mount Pleasant. The four-person scramble will begin with breakfast at 8 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will take place at 1:30 p.m. and will include a live auction and silent auction. Registration costs $50 for students and $75 for all others. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Student Economic Emergency Fund, which provides financial assistance to students within the college. June 9 through 10/Central Michigan University will host the annual conference of the Michigan ACE Network for Women Leaders in Higher Education June 9 and 10 at the James B. Henry Center for Executive Development in Lansing. This year's conference, "Our Journeys: Diverse Paths, Common Ground," will offer women leaders in higher education the opportunity to come together and explore such issues as leadership strategies, career planning, diversity and more. If completed by 5 p.m. June 1, registration costs $100 for students and $169 for all others. After the deadline, individuals must register on site; prices increase to $120 for students and $189 for all others. June 18 through 20/"Grandparents U," a summer camp experience for grandparents and their grandchildren ages 8 through 12, will take place June 18 through 20 on the Central Michigan University campus. During the camp, participants will be able to attend educational sessions taught by CMU faculty members, eat and live in CMU's residence halls, and take part in a variety of evening events highlighting campus facilities. Registration costs $150 for children and $175 for adults and includes admission to classes, a two-night stay in a CMU residence hall, meals, a certificate of participation and a variety of other program materials. May 17/The second annual HATS Off to the Arts, a gala fundraiser event for the Humane Animal Treatment Society, will take place May 17 in Central Michigan University's Health Professions Building. During the event, approximately 150 pieces of art by local and national artists will be available for viewing and purchase. A special champagne preview will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the exhibition and sale from 7 to 10 p.m.; an open bar, hors d'oeuvres and desserts also will be featured. May 29 through 31/Special Olympics Michigan will host its 2008 State Summer Games May 29 through 31 on the campus of Central Michigan University. The opening ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. May 29 in Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Throughout the weekend, more than 3,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities will compete in 10 sports, including gymnastics, bowling, weightlifting, softball throwing and more. The closing ceremony will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. May 30 in Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Admission to all events is free and open to the public. May 30 through June 1/"'The Will' at Idlewild: Classical Connections to African-American Culture," will take place May 30 through June 1 at the Idlewild Historic Cultural Center, 7025 Broadway Ave. in Idlewild. The weekend will feature performances of "The Will," a play written by Central Michigan University professor emerita Sandra Seaton. Performances of the play, which portrays the life of an African-American family living in Tennessee after the Civil War, will take place at 8 p.m. May 30 and 31 and at 2 p.m. June 1. The weekend also will include "Conversations on African-American Culture and Classical Music," two panel discussions, from 2 to 5 p.m. May 31. Youth clinics, workshops and master classes will also be featured. Tickets for "The Will" cost $10 each and include admission to the "Conversations" panel discussions.
