A national pest-control company has some new ideas for its Yellow Pages advertisements, including one created by two Central Michigan University students. George A. Todoroff, a senior from Fostoria, and Jessica VanHoose, a senior from Greenville, designed advertisements for Terminix and earned an honorable mention in the annual Yellow Pages Collegiate Advertising Competition.

The contest, sponsored by the Yellow Pages Association, attracted 800 entries from 1,400 students nationwide. Contestants were required to create print and online advertisements for Terminix. Marketing directors and administrators from Terminix and ServiceMaster Yellow Pages judged the entries.

For their efforts, Todoroff and VanHoose earned a $300 combined award, as well as a letter of recommendation from the president of the Yellow Pages Association. Art faculty member Sung Hun Choi, the students' adviser, will receive a $200 prize.

Todoroff, who will apply for admission to CMU's graphic design program in the fall, said he has taken art classes for as long as he can remember.

"I've actually been a student of art for most of my life," said Todoroff. "I am proud to be commended for my hard work in design, and I am equally as proud to represent Central Michigan University as a school with an exemplary graphic design program."

VanHoose, who also will apply for the graphic design program in the fall, has studied art for the past three years.

"I was surprised and excited that we won the honorable mention award," said VanHoose, adding that she looks forward to joining CMU's graphic design program. "It's exciting when your designs get chosen out of many applicants."

According to its Web site, "The competition provides 'real world' experience for students interested in pursuing an education and/or career in advertising, marketing, graphic design or a related field."
