Sept. 10/Central Michigan University's 2008 United Way fund drive kickoff will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 10 in CMU'S Central Park, located near the Charles V. Park Library. The free event is open to the public and aims to create awareness about the university's United Way fund drive, which runs through Oct. 18 and aims to raise $89,999. Activities will include a dunk tank, an obstacle course and remarks by fund drive co-chairs Stan and René Shingles. Free cotton candy and popcorn will be provided, and Domino's pizza will be sold for $1 per slice. Rain site is Finch Fieldhouse. For more information, call Teri Rau at 989-774-3334.

Sept. 10/Albany Law School professor Paul Finkelman will present "Affirmative Action for the Master Class: Understanding the Proslavery Constitution" at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 in Room 162 of Central Michigan University's Anspach Hall as part of the university's Constitution Day celebration. A specialist in American legal history, race and the law, Finkelman is the author of more than 100 scholarly articles and more than 20 books. He is an expert in such areas as the law of slavery, constitutional law and legal issues surrounding baseball. Admission is free and open to the public. Sept. 11/Central Michigan University's College of Communication and Fine Arts will present "Resurrection of a Life," a Riecker Literary Series solo narrative performance by communication and dramatic arts faculty member James Eikrem, at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Townsend Kiva in CMU's Moore Hall. The event will mark the 100th birthday of author William Saroyan. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call the college dean's office at 989-774-1885.

Sept. 12/Central Michigan University's social work program will offer a continuing education workshop regarding pain management from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Sept. 12 in the Strosacker Room of CMU's Charles V. Park Library. The workshop, presented by Mary Boudreau, LMSW, RN, will be in an interactive seminar format and will focus on how non-medical personnel can help clients with pain. Pain management is a required CE topic for licensed social workers. Admission to this workshop, which is open to the public, is $15 for field instructors and $25 for all others. Sept. 12/Central Michigan University's social work program will offer a continuing education workshop regarding human resources from 12:45 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Strosacker Room of CMU's Charles V. Park Library. The workshop, presented by Tom Conklin, LMSW, will be in a seminar format and will cover the practical aspects of human resource management in social work practice settings. It will include a balance of human and legal perspectives and will be based on an overview of general human resource accreditation standards. Sept. 15 through Oct. 10/A Hispanic Heritage Month exhibition will be displayed Sept. 15 through Oct. 10 in Central Michigan University's Multicultural Education Center on the lower level of the Bovee University Center. Sept. 15/A kickoff event for Central Michigan University's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 15 on the front lawn of the Bovee University Center. The event, sponsored by Minority Student Services, kicks off a month of programming that will run through Oct.15. Admission to the kickoff event, which will include the distribution of the month's schedule of events, is free and open to the public. For more information, call 989-774-3945.

Sept. 16/Central Michigan University's Speak Up, Speak Out: The Current Event Series will present a discussion titled "Un-spin that Sound Bite! Sept. 16/Central Michigan University's School of Music will present a concert by guest ensemble Lawrence Angell & Friends: "Chamber Music from Cleveland" at 8 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Staples Family Concert Hall in CMU's Music Building. Admission is free and open to the public. The concert, which will feature musicians from the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Institute of Music, is made possible by the Chamichian Endowment. Sept. 19/CMU Public Broadcasting, Central Michigan University's Multicultural Education Center and the Mount Pleasant Area Diversity Group will present "Paul Conrad: Drawing Fire," a PBS Independent Lens documentary about the work of former Los Angeles Times editorial cartoonist Paul Conrad, at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 19 in the auditorium of CMU's Charles V. Through Sept. 28/"Rural Impressions," an exhibition of digital photography by Nitin Amersey, is on display through Sept. 28 in the third-floor exhibition area of Central Michigan University's Charles V. Park Library. Amersey, a Freeland resident, takes customary, everyday scenes, occurrences and people and transforms the whole into photo art that is visually and aesthetically pleasing. Through Sept. 30/The CMU Student Art League, a group of Central Michigan University students and alumni who participate in arts-related activities throughout campus and the Mount Pleasant community, is presenting an exhibition through Sept. 30 in the Extended Hours Study of CMU's Charles V. Park Library. The exhibit will feature drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures and written text works focused on cellular biology, social systems, interaction and forms of communication. Through Jan. 30, 2009/"The President and the American Imagination," an exhibition featuring selections from the library's extensive collection of more than 100 years of presidential campaign biographies, is on display through Jan. 30, 2009, at Central Michigan University's Clarke Historical Library. Admission is free and open to the public. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on select Saturdays; hours may vary during the summer and the early part of the fall semester. Through January 2009/"Beyond Barbie: Dolls, Dress and Culture in Global Perspective," an exhibit featuring more than 100 dolls dressed in traditional attire representing a variety of world cultures, is on display through January 2009 at Central Michigan University's Museum of Cultural and Natural History. In addition to the dolls, the exhibit also includes a children's educational activity room and special programs. The exhibition's elements are complemented by the museum's Web site, http://www.museum.cmich.edu, where visitors can view the dolls and learn about each one online.
