Oct. 20/Central Michigan University's Program Board will present "DeFace the Nation," a performance by the Second City comedy troupe, at 8 p.m. Oct. 20 in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium. Oct. 21/Central Michigan University's College of Graduate Studies will host the 2008 Graduation Education Fair from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Bovee University Center Rotunda. The fair will feature representatives from many of CMU's graduate-level programs and will provide an opportunity for prospective graduate students to connect with faculty from numerous academic departments and learn about pursuing a graduate degree. Fleming is the co-host of the Biography Channel program "Dead Famous," which details his cross-country travels as he searches for the ghosts of deceased celebrities. Oct. 22/Recreation, parks and leisure services administration students in Central Michigan University's RPL 430: Recreation Programming course will host "Carve for a Cause," a pumpkin-decorating contest, from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22 in the lobby of Fabiano, Emmons and Woldt residence halls on the CMU campus. From 6 to 7:30 p.m., the public is welcome to view the decorated pumpkins and vote for favorites by placing money into a jug near each pumpkin. All proceeds will benefit United Way of Isabella County. The event also will include music, raffles, food and beverages, and Halloween-themed games. Oct. 22/Central Michigan University's Fall 2008 Griffin Policy Forum, "What Will Happen November 4, and How Will the Results Impact Michigan?" will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium. Tim Skubick, anchor and producer of WKAR's "Off the Record," will serve as moderator of the semiannual forum. Panelists will include Saul Anuzis, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party; Mark Brewer, chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party; Charlie Cain, Lansing bureau chief of The Detroit News; Ron Dzwonkowski, editorial page editor of the Detroit Free Press; Ed Sarpolus, director of the Michigan Education Association's government affairs department; and Tom Shields, president of Marketing Resource Group Inc. Oct. 22 through 26/Central Michigan University's University Theatre will present the play "Medea" Oct. 22 through 26 in Moore Hall's Bush Theatre. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. nightly Oct. 22 through 25 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 26. The classic story, written by Euripides in 431 B.C. during the golden age of Greek theater, is a passionate tale of the jealousy and revenge of a woman betrayed by her husband. Communication and dramatic arts Chairman Neil Vanderpool will serve as director. Oct. 24 and 25/The sixth annual Michigan Story Festival will feature a Michigan-centric theme and will take place Oct. 24 and 25 on CMU's campus. The festival will feature events for all ages, including everything from a children's "Pockets, Pullouts and Hiding Places" workshop at the University Art Gallery to a presentation about personal stories from wartime. Headline acts include Margaret Willey, author of the "Clever Beatrice" children series about the adventures of a girl in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and Bill Lepp, a humorous, nationally recognized storyteller for audiences of all ages. Willey's presentation will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 25 in the Staples Family Concert Hall in CMU's Music Building; Lepp will perform from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Oct. 25 in Moore Hall's Townsend Kiva. Oct. 25/Recreation, parks and leisure services administration students in Central Michigan University's RPL 430: Recreation Programming course will host "Dash-for-a-Dream," a 5K Run and 1 mile fun run, at 9 a.m. Oct. 25; check-in will begin at 8 a.m. at Wellness Central, 2600 Three Leaves Drive in Mount Pleasant. Preregistration costs $10.25, while on-site registration will cost $15; the first 75 registrants will receive a free T-shirt. All proceeds benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. Participants are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes to the event, and the individual with the best costume will win a pair of tickets to the Nov. 15 University of Michigan versus Northwestern University football game in Ann Arbor. Oct. 25/Central Michigan University's art department and University Art Gallery will present "Pockets, Pullouts and Hiding Places," an interactive children's book art workshop, from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 25 at the gallery as part of the Michigan Story Festival. The workshop, which will feature workstations created and staffed by CMU's student chapter of the National Art Education Association, is intended for children ages 5 through 10. Oct. 25/Central Michigan University's Off-Campus Programs, along with CMU Public Broadcasting and the Mount Pleasant Association for the Education of Young Children, will sponsor the sixth annual Make a Difference Day: Reading Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 25 in CMU's Finch Fieldhouse. The event, presented as part of the national Make a Difference Day, will allow children to take part in a day of reading, arts and crafts, face painting, refreshments, free books, and more. The event will feature visits by Dora the Explorer, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Click-it the Cricket, the "Dog Tales" dogs and Mr. McFeely from "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood." Children also can sign up for the young writers' workshop "Catching the Writing Bug," as well as take part in a reading corner in which they can read books before choosing one to take home. Oct. 25/Central Michigan University's 2008 Journalism Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony will take place Oct 25 at the Soaring Eagle Inn and Conference Center, 5665 E. Pickard in Mount Pleasant; doors open at 6 p.m., with a dinner at 7 p.m. and the induction ceremony immediately following. Inductees include 1976 CMU graduate Michelle Bearden, religion writer for the Tampa (Fla.) Tribune; former CMU student Michael S. Oct. 26/Recreation, parks and leisure services administration students in Central Michigan University's RPL 430: Recreation Programming course will host an "UN-BOO-LIEVABLE Halloween Fall Fest" from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 26 at Papa's Pumpkin Patch, 3909 S. Summerton Rd. in Mount Pleasant. The Halloween-themed event will feature a corn maze, a moon bounce, face painting, bobbing for apples, raffles for children and adults, a costume contest, and more for grade school-aged children and their parents, grandparents and siblings. Cider, doughnuts, pizza, pop and Halloween candy also will be available. Admission to the corn maze is $4 for children and $6 for adults. Tickets for food and additional activities will be sold for $5 for an arm's length of tickets or $1 for 3 tickets. All proceeds will benefit Mount Pleasant Parks and Recreation. Mission in Mount Pleasant. Male students, female students, CMU faculty and staff members, and registered student organizations will compete in their respective categories in the speed-eating contest; prizes will be awarded to the winner in each category. Through January 2009/"Beyond Barbie: Dolls, Dress and Culture in Global Perspective," an exhibit featuring more than 100 dolls dressed in traditional attire representing a variety of world cultures, is on display through January 2009 at Central Michigan University's Museum of Cultural and Natural History. In addition to the dolls, the exhibit also includes a children's educational activity room and special programs.
