Oct. 19/Central Michigan University's "Speak Up, Speak Out: The Current Events Series" forum will present a discussion titled "Democrats and Republicans: Defining Themselves in the Obama Era" at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Bovee University Center Auditorium. Oct. 20/Central Michigan University's School of Music will present a guest artist performance by Arcos Trio at 8 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Music Building's Staples Family Concert Hall. The trio will present a blend of the classics with music of our time, with an emphasis on works by American, Latin American and women composers. CMU faculty member Seunghee Lee is the trio's violinist. Tickets cost $3 for CMU students and senior citizens and $5 for all others and can be purchased at the Central Box Office on the lower level of the Bovee University Center or by calling 888-CMU-0111. Oct. 21/Central Michigan University's Multicultural Education Center will present "Jump Back Honey: The Poetry and Performance of Herbert Woodward Martin," a film by David Schock with comments by Martin, at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 in the CMU Park Library Auditorium. Oct. 22/Central Michigan University's Multicultural Education Center will present "The Role of the African American Artist," a presentation by Herbert Woodward Martin, as an installment of the Soup and Substance luncheon series, at noon Oct. 22 in the Bovee University Center Terrace rooms. Works include the Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich, the Howard Hanson Serenade featuring CMU faculty member Joanna Cowan White and the Symphony in D Minor by Cesar Franck. Oct. 23/Art Reach of Mid Michigan will host "Sustaining the Arts in our Community," an Art Reach Benefit for the Arts Auction, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in Central Michigan University's Engineering and Technology Building, kicking off the seventh annual Michigan Story Festival. This event will provide a strolling dinner, cash bar, and live and silent auctions. Tickets for the auction are $45 and can be purchased by calling the Art Reach office at 989-773-3689.
Oct. 23 and 24/Central Michigan University's Alpha Phi Omega will present "Haunted Campus" at the CMU Disc Golf Course from 9 p.m. to midnight Oct. 23 and 24. "Haunted Campus" is an annual Alpha Phi Omega fundraising event for the chapter's year-round service program. Cost is $3 in advance from Halloween Central, located at 207 W. Broadway in Mount Pleasant; from members of CMU's Alpha Phi Omega chapter; or at a display table downstairs in the Bovee University Center Oct. 14, 19, 20 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets also can be purchased for $5 at the door. Oct. 23 and 24/The seventh annual Michigan Story Festival will take place Oct. 23 and 24 on Central Michigan University's campus. The festival will feature events for all ages, including everything from a "Musical Folktales" hands-on event for children to a story from the diary of a Civil War soldier told by a nationally known storyteller. Headline acts include children's author Jeffery Schatzer, author of the "Professor Tuesday" series; Native American artist Kevin Locke, a traditional storyteller and musician who is known for his inspiring Hoop Dance; and the Battlefield Band. Oct. 24/Central Michigan University's Off-Campus Programs will host the seventh annual Make a Difference Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 in CMU's Finch Fieldhouse as part of the Michigan Story Festival. Features of this event will include an interactive display by the Mount Pleasant Discovery Museum and American Chemical Society, face painting and balloon art with the Michigan Clowns, Dora the Explorer, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Click-it the Cricket, the "Dog Tales" dogs reading time, a Hulk Hogan impersonator reading time, free books, arts and crafts, and more. Children also can sign up for the young writer's workshop "Catching the Writing Bug." Make a Difference Day activities are free and open to children up to fifth grade. Continuing Events
Oct. 21/The A-Wall, the indoor climbing wall run by Central Michigan University's recreation, parks and leisure services administration department, is the site of Open Mic Night from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, including Oct. 21, in room 112 of CMU's Finch Fieldhouse. Musical acts will perform, and the rock wall will be open for climbing. For those interested in climbing, admission costs $7, while rentals of harnesses and climbing shoes cost $3 each; shoe rental is not required if tennis shoes are worn. Spectator attendance is free and open to the public. Through Oct. 24/The University Art Gallery at Central Michigan University will host "Michael Ferris: Recent Works," an exhibition featuring artwork by New York artist Michael Ferris, through Oct. 24. Ferris creates wood-bust portraits using found, recycled wood and color wood putty. This exhibition is in cooperation with George Adams Gallery, New York City; Hope College; and Edinboro University in Edinboro, Penn. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free and open to the public. Through Oct. 25/Central Michigan University's Park Library will display murals depicting the events of the past six Michigan Story Festivals in honor of the 2009 Michigan Story Festival (Oct. 23 and 24). Through Oct. 28/"Envisioning: The Power of Ritual," an exhibition featuring more than 90 prints, paintings and drawings from the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City, is on display through Oct. 28 in the Baber Room of Central Michigan University's Charles V. Park Library. The artwork, which is on loan from Northwestern Michigan College, represents the silkscreen prints of six seminal contemporary Canadian Indian artists. Through Oct. 28/Central Michigan University's Theatre of the Absurd will present an open video art exhibition during library hours through Oct. 28 in Park Library's Extended Study Hours Room. The Theatre of the Absurd is a newly founded new-art-collaborative Registered Student Organization interested in creating and promoting new media artwork like video and performance and, by doing so, increasing public awareness of art. Through Oct. 30/Central Michigan University's Multicultural Education Center will present "Fearless," an exhibit of sports photographs by Jeff Sheng, through Oct. 30. The exhibit is free and open to the public in celebration of Coming Out Week and co-sponsored by the Office of Gay and Lesbian Programs.
