CMU research explores exercise as a Parkinson's disease treatment

Exercise is known to be an important element for improving health, and it may be even more beneficial to those with Parkinson's disease, which affects 1.5 million Americans. Treatment options are limited, but CMU researchers are working to change that.

Levodopa, also called L-dopa, is the most common treatment for Parkinson's disease. L-dopa is extremely effective for Parkinson's patients at first, but ultimately wears off and causes approximately two-thirds of those receiving this therapy to suffer from dyskinesia, a disease that causes disabling, abnormal and involuntary movements that limit adequate long-term control of Parkinson's disease.

Justin Oh-Lee, CMU associate professor of psychology, along with student researchers, are exploring how exercise, physical therapy and diet may benefit Parkinson's patients when combined with drug therapy or as an alternative to drug therapy.

"We believe that drug therapy combined with exercise therapy is a great way to investigate and find ways to treat these patients and improve their quality of life," said Oh-Lee.

Although still in the early stages, initial research results indicate that combining drug therapy with exercise can be very beneficial in preventing and alleviating side effects that are associated with L-dopa therapy.

CMU plans groundbreaking for School of Medicine

A milestone in the establishment of Central Michigan University's School of Medicine will take place later this month. A groundbreaking ceremony will take place February 18 outside of the east entrance of the Health Professions Building.

The 2 p.m. ceremony will include an indoor presentation and reception immediately following.

"The groundbreaking for a facility designed to meet the Liaison Committee on Medical Education's accreditation standards is a significant milestone in the development of a School of Medicine," said Kathleen M. Wilbur, CMU's interim president. "It signifies to our partners and others that the medical school is on track and moving forward. It also provides a state-of-the-art education facility, not only for the education of medical school students, but other CMU students from a wide variety of disciplines."

The $24 million, 60,000-square-foot addition to the Health Professions Building will house the School of Medicine and is to be completed in early 2012.

"The groundbreaking is a historic event for the medical school at Central Michigan University," says Dr. Cam Enarson, interim dean of the School of Medicine. "It serves as a formal marker in the development of the school and is reflective of the university's commitment to the development of an excellent medical education program here at CMU."

According to Enarson, the medical school's emphasis will be to prepare students for practice in mid- and northern Michigan, as well as the Upper Peninsula, with particular attention to primary care needs in the region.

The ceremony is free and open to the public. Make reservations by contacting Carolyn Studebaker at carolyn.studebaker@cmich.edu or 989-774-7547.

Artist Amy Reckley came to Central Michigan University as the fall 2009 Stephen L. Barstow Artist-in-Residence and spent the semester working on her art and imparting her creativity and wisdom on CMU students as an art faculty member.

Reckley, who creates two- and three-dimensional drawings, installed her work, "Domestic Cyclone," in the University Art Gallery Dec 2.

The exhibit includes six wall-hung abstract drawings, which are brought to life through a three-dimensional sculpture created using building and interior decoration materials such as contact paper and vinyl wood.

The Barstow Artist-in-Residence program, initiated by the late architect Stephen L. Barstow of Midland, allows visiting artists to occupy a Barstow-designed riverside home and interact with CMU's student and faculty artists.

The artist-in-residence is responsible for teaching two courses each semester, presenting a talk and solo exhibition, and donating an original piece of artwork to the University Art Gallery.

CMU students showcase research and creative endeavors

Nearly 70 undergraduate students from academic programs across Central Michigan University recently presented their research and creative work -- ranging from interior design concepts to children's learning strategies -- during the sixth annual Student Research and Creative Endeavors Exhibition.

Sponsored by the College of Education and Human Services, SRACE has become a showcase for projects, allowing students the opportunity to share their scholarly and creative endeavors with the campus community.

This year's exhibit featured projects from human environmental studies; teacher education and professional development; foreign languages, literatures and cultures; and the First Year Experience program.

"These students are working as scholars in their respective fields," said Abalo Adewui, an associate professor in the teacher education and professional development department. "This is an authentic way for them to demonstrate their mastery of knowledge and skills in their field as opposed to the traditional pen and paper test."

CMU students, professors deliver 700 pounds of school supplies to Ghana

TO VIEW A VIDEO, CLICK HERE.

Weighing in at 700 pounds, cardboard boxes full of calculators, books, magnifying lenses, microscopes, and a number of other math and science supplies are now in the hands of hundreds of children in Ghana.

The educational materials -- made possible though donations from Central Michigan University and science vendors throughout the country -- provides Ghana students with what many American schools take for granted: the tools they need to learn.

Student teachers and faculty from CMU's teacher education and professional development department recently returned from Ghana and said the children were thrilled with the new supplies.

"It was such a joy to see their excitement when it all arrived," said CMU senior Whitney Reeds of Big Rapids, who was one of eight CMU student teachers who spent the past two months in Ghana. "All of the students were included in the handing over ceremony of the supplies. These science materials are greatly needed and will be an asset to their curriculum."

Delivering annual school supplies to Ghana began in 2006 with a partnership forged by Jim McDonald, a CMU science education faculty member, and the late College of Education and Human Services Dean Karen Adams.

McDonald is a veteran science educator who helps oversee CMU students who complete their student teaching experience in the Ghanaian village of Tema -- a program that has been offered to CMU education students since 2004.

"Our student teachers have learned to be flexible, make critical decisions about teaching and learning and have collaborated with another country's education system, which results in amazing experiences for our students," McDonald said. "This is our way of giving back and seeing that children in Ghana receive a good science education."
