Richard Backs


Richard Backs is an expert on psychophysiology - the science that links psychology and physiology. Recent projects have included monitoring how people respond to stimuli while driving a car, and research on older drivers and drivers with attention disorders in order to increase driver safety by reducing the number of fatal crashes involving these groups. He also studies cognitive aging.

Backs is director of the CMU Driving Evaluation, Education and Research (DEER) Center, which will provide clinical services to evaluate cognitive fitness to drive along with education to improve the safety of older drivers, and conduct research on older drivers and drivers with attention disorders.
